Pissed "My Computer" Issues

"My Computer" TAKES FOREVER to load. I reformatted maybe...two months ago. It started doing this about 3-5 weeks ago.( i can go on about it, but most of the things that it is doing are in This Thread.

Ill quote

"When I try to do anything that requires the disk drive icons to display such as opening My Computer or trying to drop down the list of locations, it takes forever. When I open My Computer, the searching flashlight searches for over 5 minutes before it displays the icons. Trying to drop down a list of locations also takes forever and seems like the computer freezes."

"If I drop down the list of locations to save a file in Word 2003, it also takes forever."

"If I right-click a file and choose send-to - that also takes a long time to display the list of locations."

"The search screen will not search... I fill in what I am looking for, click search and nothing."

"Internet explorer still not going anywhere but the home page. I type in a new address, press enter or click the "go" button and nothing." But thankfully, i use Mozilla and it works FINE.

"Also, I've tried saving from Wordperfect and Notepad... same thing happens when I try to select a location... it will display a list of locations.albeit taking 10 minutes."

Ehm, i tried disabling anything in IE, and nothing happens. Still the same.

Ive tried defragging. Does nothing.. I dont know what else to do. but either way....

i have rebooted without the ide cable plugged into my cd drive, this did nothing. the problem was still there.

i unplugged myself from interenet, and rebooted INTO SAFEMODE.

i did 4 malware and spyware scans, they all found some things. did my AVG antivir scan, it found nothing. whilst in safe mode....My Computer opened up LIGHTNING FAST, just as it should. i rebooted into regular windows and it still took 5 mins to display.

Sounds like something is running on start up that is causing the problem. Run 'msconfig' and check the Startup tab. Either uncheck everything (keeping track of what was originally checked) and bring items back one at a time or uncheck them one at a time, reboot after each unselection and see if you can determine which item is causing the problem.

my apologies for postwhoring.

i just went BACK to the msconfig on the startup tab.

the TWO things i took OFF the startup, are back on there.

one is called "ctfmon" and is located in the Windows/system32 folder.

the other is called "dumprep 0 -u" and under Command it says %systemroot%\system32\ dumprep 0 -u

Which of these "ctfmon" listings do you have?

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=ctfmon

If it's the CW one, run Cool Web Search and/or Adaware and Spybot to remove it.

What do you see in the Processes tab? Look for things running under your name (user name) and see if anything there may be suspect. Just don't shut down explorer!

Have you tried backing off the oc to see if it may be affecting the performance? Another possible repair idea would be to run sfc/scannow.

sfc scanow found something.

apparently not the something to fix the My Computer Issue.

backing off the O/C does nothing either. i am beginning to think the only solution may be to reformat? which would be....devastating at this point.

Try an over the top repair first. No need to format yet.

Here's what I think might have happened...while your system was overclocked, some system file or driver may have gotten corrupted. From the description of the problem it sounds like a driver but I'm not positive. Have you considered doing a nuke and pave (format and reinstall) of Windows?

Also, your sig is way too big and very annoying. I think you should reduce the size and change the font and colors before one of the mods do it for you.

I edited his sig as you were posting, Cricket.

NOBODY is ditching you, but you MUST be patient, this isn't a chatroom.

Read the sticky thread in the Security forum, do everything suggested, and post a HijackThis log immediately after a fresh reboot before opening anything else.
