Unhappy Seems to be an unsolvable Problem

Hi,
I've searched the internet and this board for this problem and no luck. On the internet it keeps referring to blaster worm here people ask and get no answer. I built a PC out of spare parts to practice networking on with my main PC. I installed XP Home with SP1 all was fine. I had a disk for SP2 installed that. Now I get "Generic Host Process for Win32 services has encountered Problem and needs to close" I click on the error box and it gives me two files "wer6dc.dir00/ svchost.exe.mdmp" and "wer6dc.dir00/ appcompat.txt". I go into internet connections and no connection is listed though I can get onto the internet. The update feature does not work in XP or does the Security Center. This is a brand new install of XP I have installed no other programs but because all the internet sites have said I have the blaster worm I ran Symantec's removal tool, I have run Stinger, I have run Housecall and as expected found nothing. I have run Adaware, Spybot and have Spyblaster running they just found the usual few things you get with a fresh install of XP which I deleted, so this PC is clean and I still get that error on boot up. Some site suggested it might be sound card drivers, I removed the sound card, still get the error. The hardware is a Abit KT7A mobo, a Athlon 1.2 Gig Processor, 512K Crucial Ram, Linksys Nic card, soundblaster sound card, Viper 550 16 MEG AGP Video Card, hooked up to DLink router which is attached to a Toshiba cable modem with Road Runner. Does anyone know what is going on?? Please help!
TIA

Thanks glc, I was thinking of that, I uninstalled and reinstalled it a couple of times and get the same thing. It runs fine with SP1 I guess I can live with that. There seems to be no solution. It must be a problem with some of that old hardware.

Well I got the BSOD uninstalling SP2 and now it hangs on the Welcome screen. I'm going to do Windows repair, I sure hate running it without SP2. I like the way SP2 runs on my main PC, which is essentially the same as the one I'm having problems with.

For any who run into this problem I found a solution that worked in this case, I went into the BIOS and selected "Load Fail-Safe Defaults. Reinstalled XP and SP2 without a hitch. When I was all done I went back into the BIOS and reselected "Optimal Defaults" and everything is happy. Also FYI when Windows says you have no virus software click on "Obtain Virus Software" I believe or somthing like that and you can get a year's free of CA EZ Armor which is virus and firewall.

Your board is about 4-5 yrs. old have you got the latest Bios for this board, how about latest drives for your hardware? SP2 is kinda' finicky when it comes to old drives. Check this out: http://www2.abit.com.tw/page/en/down...+Flash+Utility

Thanks for the link cordered6651, I thought it might be old hardware. I had updated to the latest BIOS. I don't know why the above solution worked but it did, the timeing might have been off for some piece of hardware and slowing it down brought it in line. After everything was installed I set it back to optimal defaults and everything was fine.
