SP2 diaster

At some point after installing SP2 on my old dell inspiron 8100, the toshiba
SD-R2002 dvd/cdr/cdrw combo drive drivers corrupted. Searching around,
other people have had problems with this also. There is no fix on windows
of course, and no fix from dell or toshiba....
I thought about using the manual install form the windows xp cd, but, since
the drive is installed improperly I can't use a cd.... I am currently
trying to network it and share the cd from my desktop...
I tried uninstalling SP2, and switching out a another drive from the other
laptop... both drives worked on the other one with SP1 installed... but
neither worked on the other one...
which means the entire windows cdrom driver cab file is corrupted... I have
to 1) manually delete it from the registry.. then reinstall from online
updates... or the cd... or 2) manually install a clean file from an xp cd...
Anyway out from this disaster or which way to go?
