XP SP2 Freezes when loading
Hi all, long time no see; I have a weired problem, I have a computer at home connected to a domain, the PC is running XP with SP2 slipstreamed into it. However I came home today to find the system frozen, the keyboard was dark (new MS one with fingerprint) and the USB hub was also dark, Mouse would not respond.
I rebooted the system and after entering my username and password, the screen loaded for about 45 seconds and then the same issue happened, booted into safe mode and everything seemed to be fine, disabled everything loading and retried, same issue. Booted back to safe mode, and ran chkdsk no problems found on c: drive, never scanned d: but that just has files stored on it, nothing being accessed, in desperation i put the cd in, and selected to repair the installation, however it fails with around 35 minutes to go, at detecting devices screen with the same issue, system hangs, I replaced the keyboard and mouse, issue remains. Any ideas/help very much appreciated. |

Check your power management settings, both in the bios and in windows. It's best to let Windows handle it.

thanks I am fairly certain that the BIOS has nothing set for power options, but will double check when I get home.

It is also possible that the USB ports are broken. I've encountered that before. Have you tried changing USB ports?

Yep I did that, hit R to repair install and same thing after it booted up after copying files, I am wondering if I have put the IDE cable in the wrong way round, but the disks are found by the BIOS. Thanks |
