Maximum size of email attachment in outlook?
I have windows XP Pro with Microsoft outlook 2003 as my email program with Norton Internet Security. I cannot send an attachment greater than about 3mb. I have checked with my ISP and we ran an experiment that tested the ISP by using the ISPs internet email capability and had no problem sending and receiving an 8mb attachment (there is 30mb available at the ISP for email). Is there a restriction on either outlook or Norton that is preventing me from sending large attachments?

Outlook doesn't have a max size. But most ISP's do. Can you send an 8meg file to yourself?

I would recommend checking with another email program (not webmail - your SMTP server and the one your webmail uses may be entirely different) or stop Norton's mailscan and try sending.

Ezystvy,
The maximum size for an email on my ISP is 8mb. At the ISP web email site we were able to receive and send a 6mb file. So, I know that my problem is not due to the ISP limitations. Thanks for letting me know that it is not outlook. I will not concentrate on the Norton security program. Statica, I truned off Norton Internet Security (this did not include antispam) and I was not able to send the email. I will now turn off both Internet Security and Antispam and try again. |

It still does not work
I turned off Norton Internet Security and Antispam. When trying to send the email with large attachment I still get the message that Norton is scanning it and the server times out. I am now sure this is what causes the problem. There does not appear any way to turn the darn thing off. I have an email sent to Norton about it but I have not heard back from them.
Any further suggestions would be welcome. |

Uninstall NIS and find a different security suite that doesn't have issues such as this. Trend Micro PC-Cillin 2005 is getting the best reviews. Sorry to put it this way, but the more I see, the more I can't endorse any Symantec security product any more.

I finally got it to work OK by doing the following:
NIS>options>NIS>email (uncheck -- display progress indicator) and NSI>options>Antivirus>email (uncheck -- scan outgoing email) However, I wonder about the effectiveness of the NIS package if I have to disable its settings. In any case, perhaps this will help others that have the same problem. |
