I recentlely got a new Dell With XP installed I have some older programs like Encarta 98, Streets and trips 2000, and Virtual Globe 98, and am afraid to try to install them. I looked at Microsoft's websites for these products for patches and upgrades but couldn't find any will they be alright to install?

Try installing them and if you have any problems with them see if the program compatibilty wizard can help you.
Start>Programs>Accessories>Program compatibility wizard

I don't know about with fresh installs, but I had one last week - I upgraded a Gateway from SP1 to SP2 - and the ONLY program that stopped working was a Microsoft program (and it wasn't that old) - I don't remember exactly which one it was offhand, but I had to dig around for a fix. ALL the 3rd party software (and there was a bunch - including an older version of Autocad) worked just fine.
