Question Scan disk/Defrag problem on 98SE

Whenever I run the windows disk defragmenter. It stops the service b/c it said "windows wrote to disk" I then tried running scan disk to fix the problem and it keeps restarting its self over and over b/c it says windows has wrote to disk. I have no idea what is causing this problem but I would like to fix it. Any suggestion? I will really appreciate any help on this!

Run it from Safe Mode and nothing will interupt it. Tap the F8 key on boot until you see a dos -like screen select Safe mode and run it from there.

Question

Thanks for you replies. But it seems now that my computer will not shut down correctly. I go through the process and it just hangs at the "Windows in shutting down you computer" screen. So I cannot shutdown my computer now without pressing the power button manually. Any suggestions on what might be causing this?

Download Diskeeper and you won't have to bother switching to safe mode.

Diskeeper is not free, it's a commercial program.

That's correct. I think it's well worth forking out a few bucks for a good bit of software.
