I don't understand the problem 100%, but it sounds like either your display drivers are corrupt, or you have some kind of virus/trojan/spyware.

When you say you have no Internet connection, if its DSL or cable, do you get an IP (use ipconfig /all)?

If you have access to another computer, try taking the hard drive out, and 'slaving' it to another computer, then run an anti-virus/spyware check from that computer. Just be sure not to open any files on that hard drive, otherwise it has the potential to infect the temporary system your using.

Be very careful using it - read the documentation. Only choose what's needed.

You may have to use this to restore Internet connectivity:

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

This is safe to run with no preparation.

You definitely need to run virus and spyware scans.

hmm... maybe we should approach it from a different view... now that I think of it, bad RAM can cause applications to malfunction. Grab yourself a copy of Ultimate Boot CD, and run the RAM test, CPU test, and do a hard drive fitness test (be careful not to zero out the drive). This would eliminate a hardware problem.
