Cannot open or explorer CD's/DVD's

This problem started this morning on my laptop (Sony VAIO VGN-A190). I am unable to open or explorer the contents of CD's or DVD's through explorer. In fact, Windows applications can't access the contents of my CD drive (they can see it, and the name of the volume in the drive, but can't open it to see the files). Auto-run works fine, and I am able to open disks using the command prompt or Nero Burning-ROM in order to see the files.

I've run a virus scan and a spyware scan with no negative results.

Please help - thanks!

"I am unable to open or explorer the contents of CD's or DVD's through explorer" -> What happens when you try

I'm not sure what you meant, but if you're asking what does actually happen when I try to open a CD in Explorer...

- If I double-click the drive, nothing at all happens - not even an error message
- If I right-click and select "open" nothing happens either
- If I right-click and select "explore" another window opens which shows my desktop for exploring
