Can't open folders or MS Explorer
I am using Windows XP home edition. I am currently unable to open any folders. I also can't open Internet Explorer (I use Firefox but was trying to get windows updates which work better in IE). When I try to open a folder or IE, the folder seams to come up and then immediately the entire destop dissappears (except for the background image) for a second and then returns without the folder open.
I ran Norton and it found 33 viruses which were quarantined. That didn't help. I used live update to get the lastest virus definitions from norton and re-scanec. It found 2 more viruses. Those were quarantined but that also didn't stop the problem. I used Adaware and Spy Bot Search & destroy which found some stuff and removed it, but I am still having the problem. I would re-format my drive but I am unable to save stuff that I want (at least not easily) since I can't open folders. Any advice? Thanks, Dan PS Oh, I found one other curious thing. If I move an Icon on my desktop and then try to open a folder, the icon moves back to where it was. Last edited by druskin; 01-08-2005 at 02:05 PM. |

Which version of Norton are you using? Also, when was the last defrag you did? Thinking this because I'd usually associate behaviour such as you've described to be due to the system needing a defrag.

I'm using Norton Antivirus 2002 version 8.07.17C (OEM for Dell).
As far as defraging, I don't think it has been too long but I'll try it just in case. |

Norton 2002 is no longer a viable virus scanning engine. There are some widely known worms that go right through it without detection.
Will it work in safe mode? If so, start backing up files. |

Can't Open Folders on Desktop
I am having the same problem. There are 4 accounts under this computer. I can get on the internet on some but not all. However unable to open the folders on the desktop. Also when opening IE it goes to BLANK instead of yahoo. I keep setting to yahoo but it defaults back to BLANK. There are about 30 viruses on this pc and not all were fixable. The rest were quarantined. I have tried running Ad ware SE and my friend said to try house clean from trend micro. Still no luck. Its running windows CP and Norton Anti Virus Corp addition. Can someone please help!!
