msconfig problem

I have win98SE, 512m ram and have an HP copier/scanner/printer officejet on lpt1. My dvd burning and my tv tuner programs seem to work better with a "clean boot". I usually do a ctl-alt-del to remove unnecessary startup items before running those programs. So, I tried instead to use msconfig selective-start to remove two files associated with the printer. They are:hpmsp4ia, and hpmsp2ia. After I uncheck these files and reboot, they re-appear again. Is there a way to keep these files from my boot sequence until I want them back for printing chores? Why don't these files stay unchecked like other startup files do?

They are probably being initialsed by another .exe, try looking at the options of your printer software and uncheck the box that says start with windows, if it has one.

They are probably being called by system.ini or win.ini.

You have the ram for it - you need to consider an upgrade to Win2K or XP. The stuff you are doing with that computer is bringing 98's resources to their knees.

msconfig problem

I got into msconfig-selective startup-win.ini and found the printer listed under both "devices" and "ports". I unchecked both entries and re-booted. Well, those two files are still present in the ctl-alt-del pop-up. I think I will just live with the small ram bite they eat. It was the tv card mfr website that warned to use a clean boot to prevent any interactions with their resource-hungry card. Thanks for the responses.....
