Which Operating System?

If XP, are you using "classic" log in where you should be able to change the user name from admin to your name.

I am using XP Pro - I don't know what you mean by "Classic login". I know how to switch the user through the 'log off' button...What I want to avoid is the machine, when it boots up, will log on the Administrator. I have to wait for the machine to finish going through all the start up nonsense before I can switch to my own user name with all the settings I want.

So is there anyway to set up the boot sequence of the machine to log on to a specific user instead of the Admin.?

Thanks for your help

How many users do you have on your system? Does your user name have Admin rights?

When you first installed XP did you set your logon screen for yourself and Administrator? I'm not quite sure as to what you're asking, but are asking, you don't want to see th logon screen just go directly to desktop? If this is your question here is the answer.

Click Start>Run and type in the following "control userpasswords2",
without the quotation marks then click OK. The User Accounts dialog
box will open, uncheck the box that says, "Users must enter a user name
and password to use this computer".Click OK and reboot you should not see
the welcome screen that requires you to logon.

Try this. Look in the Control Panel>User accounts and see if you have an account call .Net. It gets created when the .net updates are installed. Just remove that account and you should boot directly to your desk top.

I don't have an account called "net".

I also have the option of not using the passwords checked already.

Let me thoroughly discribe the problem. When the computer first boots up it goes to the Admin. user account which has only a few icons...not the usual desktop that I have with my own user account. After the machine finishes booting up I have to hit 'log off' from the Admin. account and then log on with my personal user account.

Can I safely delete the Administrator account???

No you should not. Try this:
start regedit: and go to : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Double click the key:
DefaultUsername - and change it to the username you want to actually use
Do the same for the key: DefaultPassword
Then doubleclick the AutoAdminLogon key and change it from a 1 to a 0.

If you don't have any of these keys, you can go to EDIT > NEW > String Value , type out the keys exactly as you see on these posts and then change the values.
