I am running Windows98 SE and I truly like it and have for a few years. I am having problems getting my Nikon Coopix camera to operate on this OS. I was told that it maybe because I'm using an upgraded version of SE. I have tried many avenues to get this camera working.
Question is; should I get another OS, i.e, 2000 or XP, which I don't really like, or is there something else I should try? Are there very many limitations to using 98SE in oppose to 2000, XP and 2003? My system information is in signature! Thanks! IN |

Have you downloaded and installed all the 98SE updates from Windows Update? There may be some update or patch that could fix your problem.

I have updated some of the recent update from Microsoft, but should I update all updates even if they do not apply?
Thanks! |

The software/drivers will not install with 98SE? What type of storage media does it use? Couldn't you purchase a usb card reader and download your pictures that way?
I use one of these once in a while, it works just like a flash drive, no drivers/software to install. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...191-113&depa=0 I read this off nikon web page. OS Pre-installed versions of Windows 98SE, Windows Me, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional. Pre-installed versions of Windows 98SE, does that mean full version? Not upgrade? Last edited by Spaz06; 01-11-2005 at 10:38 PM. |

If you've got the spare $90 for it, I highly recommend going to www.newegg.com and getting a copy of XP. There's no reason not to like it. It's light-years more stable than 98SE (I had trouble letting go, too. I have a dual-boot now for posterity's sake...), and you won't have near the compatibility problems. Well worth it.

One more thing, if you upgrade depending on what all you do and if you do very much multitasking you may want to upgrade the ram too.

Thanks for the info guys....I don't do very much multitasking..just emails etc...
I guess I'm just cautious in going to XP. Are there always conflicts using 98SE upgrade version. I just purchased it! Thanks I will add more RAM as well.... IN |

What does that have to do with the questions/suggestions I gave him? He/I didn't ask about a Linux version. He was asking how to get his camara to work, and I was giving him an alternate solution if he wanted to keep using 98SE! Last edited by Spaz06; 01-11-2005 at 11:37 PM. |

I think I had some incompatibility problems with 98. So when win ME came out I jumped on it, regretted it, it was worse than 98 and I so wanted my 98 back, didn't have a disc back then. So when winXP came out I went to it, there have been times when I thought about doing a dual boot system and really had a hard time leaving 98 behind but since I've got more experience with XP i've never once though about going back. XP is much more stable, secure, and has nowhere near the compatibity issues that 98 does. The way I see it, if you can afford it and get past your fear of moving from 98 to XP it'll be well worth the money.

I don't think IKNOWNOTHING is considering learning linux at this poin though. I think the best bet would be winxp. However myself, I'm still trying to expand my knowledge of computers so i think i'll give it a go. Like I said though and i'm gonna get back on topic, I dunno if IKNOWNOTHING would consider linux at all or not, but if not the best bet is to go for and upgrade to winxp, In my opinion. As I said XP is faster, more stable, secure, has nowhere near the compatibility issues of 98, basically overall a more dependable OS than 98. |

Talking Crash,I just couldn't resist, This OS is so fast and no window crashes,no virus,no need for spybot and it can handle windows software. If you have problems go to the Mepis lovers.com forums and tell them Chiquito sent you,if anyone knows me its because of the dumb questions I ask. If I can get it up and running anyone can, good luck guys ,Chiquito!!! |

I think you are all making a mountain out of a molehill. Get a $20 card reader. Every card reader I've ever seen comes with drivers for 98SE, there is no reason whatsoever to connect the camera directly to the PC.

Maybe cameras plug and play nicely with XP as simple removable drives, but with 98SE they do not. I prefer card readers anyway - and I hate almost all camera connection software - Kodak Easy Share being the absolute worst. With a card reader, you slap the card in, bingo, removable drive, copy the pics off with windows explorer, use whatever editing and management software you prefer. No importing them into the bloated software that comes with the camera. |
