windows xp repair

k this may be a dumb question but when you select the repair option from the install screen on windows it brings up a cmd prompt what do ya do w/ it? are there cirtin commands one should know and if so how the heck do i learn about them? what all can you do from the repair thingy anyway

That's the recovery console. Don't try to do a repair from there. Instead, select New Installation when the FIRST repair option is presented. Once the installation detects XP already on your computer you will be given a second repair option. Select that one.
