Start Up Problem With W2K Pro

After 2+ years of trouble free running, I'm getting an intermittent problem at startup with my W2K.
Once in a while, when booting up, I get a black screen with this message:

Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.

I've checked to see if a disk was left in a drive and of course, there are none.
Like I said, I may go a week or more before I see the message again. I can Ctrl+Alt+Del and the pc boots normally. One time I got the message twice.
TIA

Carl

Have you tried a hard drive diagnostic using the manufacturers diagnostic tool? this tool is downloadable from the manufacturers website.

Thanks for the fast reply but I'm hoping that my 80gig Maxtor SATA isn't starting to lose it.
I'll run a diagnostic and see what I get.

I d/l'd the latest Maxblast and ran it. Everything passed so the HDD is in good shape.
If the problem occurred everytime I booted the pc, the problem would be easier to pinpoint.

Thanks for the help.

Look in the bios for a HDD delay setting - add 3 seconds to whatever it's set at now.

Hi glc,
Long time no talk too.

I'll check the BIOS and make adjustments.

Thanks for the reply.

Well, it looks like I'm going to have to update the BIOS.
I searched for the HDD Delay setting and could not find one so I found this at the Asus support site. The updated BIOS has a delay setting for SATA drives.
