Upgrade MSN Messenger 4.7 to 6.2
After 'upgrading' Messenger to version 6.2, I find I still have the older verion on my computer. I cannot find it in Add/Romove Programs, only the new version I downloaded is showing there. Now, when Im running the 'new' 6.2 version of Messenger, and I open my Outlook Express email, the old one jumps in my system tray! I can also see it (version 4.7) in Windows Explorer in the 'programs' folder....
**I downloaded/installed the new version 6.2, and did not remove the old one first, because it was not indicated to do so...just FYI** Anybody able to help me rid my computer of the old MSN Messenger, 4.7, I would appreciate it! Thanks in advance for any replies! Bruce |

You might want to give this a try. Since it doesn't show up in the Add and Remove programs, here is a way to get rid of it. But back up your regestry first. I know you said it doesn't show up there, but follow the instructions below and see if it is still listed in the regestry.
Remove Program From Add/Remove Programs If you have uninstalled a program but it remains on the list in Add/Remove Programs, you can manually remove it by navigating to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Uninstall. You'll see a list of all the programs available in your Add/Remove Programs Control Panel. You can simply select an entry from the list on the left, press the Delete key, and confirm to remove it. Close the Registry Editor and restart Windows; the item will be gone from your Add/Remove Programs list. |

How would this process remove MSN version 4.7, and leave 6.2 intact??
I don't follow....(?) I'm not trying to get if off of my 'Add/Remove' list(it's not there!)...I'm trying to uninstall the old version 4.7, and rid it from my system. Thanks, Bruce |

Are you sure that's not Windows Messenger? The icons look almost identical except the butterfly on MSN. I have always installed new versions of MSN Messenger over the old and I have never had any problems.

Ahhhh*...!
Your so right!! Sorry for the confusion---totally right...now I have both--I use MSN at this point, but they 'both' land in my system tray...so How can I rid Windows Messenger from the system? Or at least stop it from coming up every time I start Outlook Express?
Seems I did this once on my lap-top..in control panel somewhere....don't remember. There is a way to disable Windows Messenger from loading when u start OE, etc Thanks for your reply! Bruce |

To uninstall windows msn messenger 4.7 in XP
copy and paste the entire script below into the run box and press OK restart your machine and the dreaded 4.7 will be gone. RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

what you do to uninstall windows messenger is goto add remove, but click on the add remove windows components on the left hand side, it was likely installed with your OS. I had the exact same problem, so I uninstalled MSN messenger 6.2 and then did what i said for 4.7, then went and did a fresh install of MSN messenger 6.2. Hope that helped and wasn't just confusing.

How do I get that back?? Looking now on the Microsoft site, but, wow! It gave no warning that it would remove my Email program! ZAP! and its gone! Both Windows Messenger and Outlook Express...bummer.. I will see what I can do to get it back Bruce |

Is your System Restore on? If so, go back a week or whatever and see if it appears again. If it doesn, then you can get rid of Windows Messenger the right way next this time.

Marke, that's the Messenger service, not Windows Messenger 4.7. Messenger is what pops up when you use net send across a network and also what hackers like to trigger with their popups. Windows Messenger is like MSN Messenger.

actually i was quoting Marke522 who did make me look stupid not you, which is why i put the quote in there. Although I did not really make the distiction between you and Marke522, sorry about that. Anyways glad to hear things worked out.
BTW Marke522 i understand that sometimes things are not meant to be taken as they are typed, just wish sometimes people would think before they type. Either way no hard feelings. |

Fox 3 - responding like that was inappropriate. I think you need to review the forum rules, we do not go off on people like that around here, we demand respect and flaming is dealt with severely, usually resulting in a ban. This is an official warning. Also, please reduce the size of your signature. Thank you.

Found the corrent method, so my earlier posts was wrong. Start/ All Programs/ Accessories/ System Tools/ Disk Clean up. When the program starts click on the 2nd tab on the top, labled "More Options." The first box will be labled "Windows Components" Click the Clean up Box, and go all the way to the bottom, Windows Messenger will be the very last program. Sorry for misleading and/or upsetting anyone. |
