Hello, Recently we got an IBM Thinkpad 600 Notepad(laptop) that came pre-installed with windows95 which works just fine with what we use it for. Upon trying to hook it up to our wireless router we realized we needed Win98se to work properly. I'm sure this has been asked before, but just as a refresher. Is it possible to upgrade with the full version of Win98se without uninstalling Win 95? Just trying to decide whether I should get the full version or the upgrade version. Thanks for the input.

Yes... you can boot to DOS from the full Win98 CD... either rename or delete the C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM file and run the setup. During the setup, you should be asked for an installation directory which will be defaulted to C:\WINDOWS.000, remember to name it back to C:\WINDOWS or else you will have a clean windows installation and not an upgrade (this is reversible).

Thanks, I went ahead and purchased a full version off Ebay. I'll make sure to take your advise when I install it. I was already leaning to the full version anyway, just needed a second opinion. I'll post again if I have any questions or problems installing.

You need a Win98 bootdisk to do this. You can download them from: www.bootdisk.com
Then you type cd windows Rename win.com win.old (I think those are the commands to rename it.) When you install windows it will ask where you want to install to - it will say c:\windows.000, just change this to c:\windows and then you do not have to do anything later on. |
