Hello,
I apologize for my absence on the forums regarding my new computer. However something horrible has just come up which is becoming far more worse by the minute. I download an update for an old computer's windows me OS. The update was Direct X 9.0A. After I did the system froze. Then I ran a restart. It froze again at the wallpaper screen (with out any interface into windows.). Then I tried safe mode and all the safe mode variations. No luck. I'm very worried about this because my Father has vital documents on this hard drive and he's very disturbed by my ignorant carelessness. And for putting his files in jeopardy. http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html I also tried to download this but I can't figure out what to download - When I click download and pick a FTP - I come to a page that lists a ton of files - I don't know if I'm suposed to download them all or just a single one. Why did you update to DirectX 9.0A in the first place? Does that computer have a DirectX 9.0A compliant video card? If not, the drivers are clashing with the newer DirectX.
What bothers me is that is won't boot into Safe Mode. What happens anyway? Does the system just freeze up or are you getting an error message of some kind? If you can't get WinME to come up at all, you'll have to take the hard drive out of that computer and slave it to another hard drive in another system. That way you can at least get your father's important data off it. Exactly what kind of computer is this? A home built or name brand one? Cricket

If you are looking for the newest Knoppix live distro it is on the ftp page as KNOPPIX_V3.7-2004-12-08-EN.iso
Here's a direct link to the file. ftp://ftp.knoppix.nl/pub/os/Linux/di...4-12-08-EN.iso |

Great NEWS!
It works "A:\SCANREG FIX" I ran this command at the A prompt after I used a WinMe Boot Disk. And then I was able to run "reg scan" and then it said it fixed some errors. I restarted the computer and now! Yes! It works! --- This is a big relief for every one. --- So now I can concentrate back on my new computer. which I'll post as soon as I right down the parts. |

Hi Prudent
. . . just a note here for future reference: the registry quick-fix is available through several methods = you discovered the manual one. With WinMe, if the system is running the builtin "System Restore" background process [which is running by default], you can simply restore the system files to a "restore point" prior to the current trouble. (This is very close to a command like the scanreg/fix command that you ran = scanreg /restore). Glad you got things fixed OK. . . . Gary |
