Cool

Using Explorer open your mobo CD and find the drivers folder. Should be a sub folder with SATA drivers. They will need to be copied to a floppy. I copied everything except the GUI and readme files. Put the floppy in and boot up your XP CD and when prompted for 3rd party drivers hit F6. It will load the drivers from the floppy and proceed with install.

What mobo do you have, and are you running sp1 or sp2? All mobo's do not require the drivers for SATA, only needed for Raid. For example my P4P800-E Deluxe with Intel ICH5 chip. In fact, installing the drivers for SATA only may cause problems. VIA and Promise do require the drivers. Also, do you have the drive plugged into SATA 1 on the mobo? Have you checked the mobo manual for proper BIOS settings for SATA only? A few months ago I had an Abit IS7 mobo, and while I could get XP to install on the SATA drive, it was slow. FWIW: was advised by a moderator on Abit forum to forget SATA on that mobo, but others say it runs fine.

If the motherboard does not have native SATA ports, then you WILL need to install third party SATA drivers. There is no way around it.
