One of my computers is serving as an FTP server, and I, along with many people can connect to the server and use it as anyone would use an FTP server.
However, On my adjacent machine, when I attempt to FTP to the IP address, It just lists the files and folders in the root directory. By list, I mean, It will not let me drag and drop files.. It appears to just be an HTML listing of files on my FTP server. This happens every server I try and connect to. My serving computer does not have this problem, and displays the server's contents as Icons, as it should (When I FTP to my own IP address). I searched all over to find out the reason for this, but I cannot find anything. Any ideas? Is there some setting I'm overlooking?

Sounds like an issue with your FTP client and not your service. Remember that the FTP server is just serving files not an interface, it depends on what you are using to connect to the server.
If you are experiencing these issues on Internet Explorer (as in, IE on one computer shows a folder view and IE on another does not) then go to the Internet Explorer that is just showing a listing, and go to TOOLS > Internet Options > Advanced tab > make sure that ENABLE FOLDER VIEW FOR FTP SITES is turned on. If this still does not answer your question, then it is likely that the Internet explorer or browser is connecting to a web server running on the same machine (or you mixed up your ports). It is highly recommended that you get a dedicated FTP client program for yourself if you do a lot of FTPing. There are countless reasons on why you should not use IE, especially if it is your own server. There are a number of freeware programs, including WS_FTP. |
