I have a problem
First off, I've looked at other threads and understand the policy regarding p/w recovery. I won't ask for that, but I a have question that I hope someone can answer. I had an admin account and a guest account and I wanted to change it to one unpassworded account. I went into user accounts and unticked fast user switching and the other box that was in "change way users log on". I forgot to change the password to blank and when I restarted it prompted me for a p/w in the classic look (blue screen, rectangular box, etc). Would this cause me to have p/w problems and if not, do you have any suggestions on the reason this would happen?

No, it shouldn't. All you did was change the interface. Can you still login ok? BTW, you should change the title of the thread to something a little more PG-13 oriented while you can.

Too late spyder. The gorilla has rattled the cage of the Panamanian Moderator. I'd also appreciate it if you'd remove the religious reference in your sig, bg. I edited your title cuz I was sure you didn't mean Where's The Fire - regardless of your 911 alert (which is a little overdone too!)

First, on what has happened to your computer -
a) When you removed fast user switching, you have removed the ability to Switch the user after one user is logged in. It means that only one user is allowed to login at a time b) When you removed the "change way users log on" you've removed the welcome screen and brought out the traditional login box Going forward, you should still be able to log in as your admin account and revert any changes you may have - simply enter your username and your password. I am guessing that you are entering the wrong username or password. The changes you have made does not affect your password. Once you are able to login, revert your changes, and post back here with what exactly you want to do. If you want to have an automatic login, then its done a different way. Post back here, and one of us will help you. Recommendation: * An unpassworded account is bad form, you can do an autologin for a user with a password, not necessary it has to be blank. * Its recommended that you do not autologin a user that has administrative rights. Please be clear in your post. Right now we do not know whats going on ... a) Did you create a new user and tried to have the person autologin b) Are you having login problems? Is the username or password getting rejected? c) Can you login as guest? (Username: guest .. password should be blank) Hopefully once all the questions are clarified, we can help you going forward. Finally, it is out of common courtesy that I ask that you dont PM people asking them to look at your thread. I do try to help as many people as I can, and it is not just me helping. Knowing that this is a community resource that is backed by a whole slew of very helpful, knowledgeable people, as long as you know how to ask a question - will only help your cause. |

Heres the issue: I recently created a p/w due to a teenage visitor that would be with me for a few days and he has a history of downloading all kinds of xxx toolbars and junk that really messed me up before. I called myself changing it back to "normal" because there was no longer a need for a p/w.(after he left, of course) I can log in by typing guest and leaving the p/w screen blank, but no other way. When I try to log in with the admistrator username it sats p/w or username is incorrect and to check spelling and case. I know the p/w, I use it for lots of things, including this site. I dont understand why it wont allow me to log in. I'm not 100% sure if the user name was right, but it was populated in the box upon restart - I'm pretty sure it was right. Have you tried logging in as Adminstrator? There is a username : Administrator , if you remember the Administrator password. If you havent set the Admin password it's blank as well. Try that.

I'm clueless!! Typing Administrator didn't help with or wihout p/w. So is my only option to get a second hard drive to copy my files to? A reformat is so out of the question. Music is my business and my pc is my tool. Now I understand what it meant when it asked "Install this program for me only or anyone who uses this computer".

And the next time, please remember to create and use a password recovery disk when you setup your system.

One last thing. Just to be clear - I know what the password is, it just isnt accepting it. Is there anyway this may be a username issue?

Ok log into your guest account, and try this (I have no idea if it will work but its worth a shot) : go to any program from the start > All programs list .. not from the frequently accessed programs list) .. right click on any program and select RUN AS ...
Select "The following user..." Click the drop down list and see the usernames. You can also check your passwords from there. |
