PCMech: Custom Brand your PC

I was interested in the following:

PC Mechanic Tip of the Day Sunday January 2, 2005

Custom Brand your PC
This allows you to place any picture and text so that it will be displayed
in the system control panel; without having to mess with the registry. There
are two parts to this:
Picture
1: Take any bitmap that's about 175x175 pixels in size.
2: Name it oemlogo.bmp
3: Copy it to the windowssystem32 folder
Text
1: open notepad type the text below and add the text to be displayed after
the "="
[General]
Manufacturer=
Model=
[Support Information]
Line1=
Line2=
Line3=
(you can create more lines if you wish)
2: Now save as oeminfo.ini into the windowssystem32 directory.
That's it. Now you have a custom branded pc.

This doesn't seem to work for me - I am using Win98se, but PCMech doesn't specify any particular Win version. Surely "windowssystem32" directory is /WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/, but what else has been left out or slurred over in this "tip"? A request to PCMech remains unanswered. Can anybody out there shed light?

This is almost a copy of PC-Mechanic's recipe. It leaves something out. Perhaps the register needs tweaking. Any gurus out there with a positive and tested method?

No registry tweaking is needed. The guide in the PC Mech tip 'o the day works.

Not on my own machine. I am running Win98SE cleanly installed on an Abit KG7 mb, AMD XP+2100 cpu, not much installed besides Norton and printer software.

I have followed the directions to the letter. What could I, or my system, be doing wrong or have overlooked?

If you and others say it works, I'll try it on some other machines in the shop just to see if it is a hardware peculiarity.

Which one are you having problems with? oemlogo.bmp or oeminfo.ini?

In Win98, you save the files to C:\Windows\System, not System32

Right! I just checked this out and it works. Thank you. It puzzles me why PC-Tech and the UK source would not have mentioned this difference between deployment under W9x and the higher cholesterol window versions. They must have assumed that everyone has bit on XP, or has shelled out for W2K. Far from the truth. XP ought to be renamed XD [eXpletives Deleted].

By the way, the original prescription to place these files in System32 does work for Win2K and WinXP. I tried this on computers in my shop.

You're welcome.
Don't be to hard on them, sometimes it the simple details that we overlook. I have been guilty of this myself.

I don't want to start a flame war here but seeing as how Microsoft stopped releasing fixes for Win98 in June of 2003 and all support in January of last year, many people have (and should have, IMHO) upgraded. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to keep providing tips and tricks for outdated operating systems. Additionally, if you don't know the right file path to use in Win98 vs. a newer OS, do you really need to be messing with it.

I haven't checked, but my understanding is that the public outcry was so great that MS "repoened" certain support for it.
