PCMech: Custom Brand your PC
I was interested in the following:
PC Mechanic Tip of the Day Sunday January 2, 2005 Custom Brand your PC This allows you to place any picture and text so that it will be displayed in the system control panel; without having to mess with the registry. There are two parts to this: Picture 1: Take any bitmap that's about 175x175 pixels in size. 2: Name it oemlogo.bmp 3: Copy it to the windowssystem32 folder Text 1: open notepad type the text below and add the text to be displayed after the "=" [General] Manufacturer= Model= [Support Information] Line1= Line2= Line3= (you can create more lines if you wish) 2: Now save as oeminfo.ini into the windowssystem32 directory. That's it. Now you have a custom branded pc. This doesn't seem to work for me - I am using Win98se, but PCMech doesn't specify any particular Win version. Surely "windowssystem32" directory is /WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/, but what else has been left out or slurred over in this "tip"? A request to PCMech remains unanswered. Can anybody out there shed light? |

I have no idea about the typos etc, or the tip of the day, I'm not subscribed to it .. but here's a good howto on creating a oeminfo.ini file

I have followed the directions to the letter. What could I, or my system, be doing wrong or have overlooked? If you and others say it works, I'll try it on some other machines in the shop just to see if it is a hardware peculiarity. |

Which one are you having problems with? oemlogo.bmp or oeminfo.ini?

In Win98, you save the files to C:\Windows\System, not System32

Resolution at last!

By the way, the original prescription to place these files in System32 does work for Win2K and WinXP. I tried this on computers in my shop. |

You're welcome.
Don't be to hard on them, sometimes it the simple details that we overlook. I have been guilty of this myself. |
