Question how do I repair Win Xp?

How do you go about repairing a Win Xp Pro installation, I have one 40 gig 7200 rpm Maxtor hdd, one partition

During the repair it asked for an installation number? What and where would that be? And then it continued to ask me for an administer password, which I remember (the one I first entered when I installed XP Pro correct? ) And what would be the steps to take after that....thanx in advance

what's wrong with your installation?
when it asks for a password, just press enter.

well see thats where the problem exists, when it asks which installation would I like to repair, Im not sure wat to put down, I know my password, so for an installation number I put a "1" and then it asked me for my administer password and I entered it but when I hit enter it went back to the command line c:/windows like I was supposed to enter something else? what would I have to do in order to continue with the installation?

if its looking for the registration number thats about 25 characters long, and you got it with the PC, then it would be mounted somewhere on the case. However, if it didnt come with the PC, then try looking for the funky holographic sticker that should be in the box/wraping around the CD.

The sticker is normaly placed in an annoying place, so try looking on the bottom first.

You are using the repair console, the c:\windows prompt is all you will get. You then start entering commands to fix what you need to fix.

If you want to do a repair reinstall, you don't use the console. Tell it to do a setup, not a repair. THEN when it finds the existing installation, you choose repair.
