quick IE launcher corrupted

hi
Suddenly today my IE launcher from the start menu shows as an unidentified file and it asks me with what application to open it.
Also some of the icons of windows application show as an .exe file (hyper terminal, wordpad , windows media player and so on) without their normal icons until I activate them again and then the icon is back.
Any ideas?

Have you scanned for virii and spyware?
Is IE still working when you launch it from the All Programs start list?

Do you have a restore point you can use?

Thanks Pam it worked.
And thanks to the nice software that created a few restore points (I believe it was spybot).
I think the last one I did was before I installed SP2.
