Processes....svchost.exe

Can someone tell me why there are so many processes running with the name

svchost.exe? Some have User Name.. Local Service, Network Service, a couple of them are System.

What are these .exe's doing, and do I need all of them running? My computer seems to be slower than my old AMD 900Mhz.

Virus scan time. Several of those running are legit, but viruses can spawn more instances.

How many do you have? I have 5 running with a mix of those names you mention.

svchost is a part of windows:

scvhost is not and indicates an infection(s):
