Outlook Express Problem on Win 2000

Have a problem creating a new e-mail address in a Laptop that uses Win 2000 the mail fails to be collected so tried creating on a Win XP machine and worked fine the only difference is on the laptop when you enter password after user name and tell it to remember, the next time you look in the properties for this account the password is not shown as a row of ******** etc but in the machine with XP it is, am I missing something in the set-up on the Win 2000 laptop or is there a problem.
