password file

I am not sure if this is the proper place to ask this question so I'll start here and if I need to move it to another forum please let me know.

I am interested in creating a file of all of my passwords. However, I want it to be very secure in two ways. One I don't want anyone else to have access to it and two I want it to be as safe as possible from being destroyed.

I used to have this file on my USB flash drive in a password protected area. However, just recently my USB flash drive died and I lost it.

Any suggestions?

I know that windows has options for constricting access to files, but I don't know much about it. However, I can point you to some third-party tools that can encrypt files. Here is a file encrypter:
http://axcrypt.sourceforge.net/
and here is a trial version of a tool that does just what you describe:

I don't know the quality of these programs.

Hi Roberto
What you need is a Password Manager. Simply put, it is an application which wuill let you organize your passwords into categories and store them. The Manageritself uses passwords to protect the password lists you create.

Examples are:
KeyWallet

Password Keeper 2000. This one is not free, but it is what I use, and it is pretty good at what it does.

I think that I'll place the file within a save area of my USB flash drive and as a backup also place it on a floppy. You remember those 4X4 inch monsters that store a meager 1.4Mb of data.

Hmmm, mine are on an Works spreadsheet in alpha order. Same file is on the wife's comp so in the event of anything happening to either of us the other has full access to all passwords. Plus, as you suggest, I keep a backup on a floppy and update all files anytime there's a change.

I find the USB flash drive very convenient since I can access all my passwords from any computer. However, as this post confirms, it is not as secure as I expected.
