What are the rest of your specs? Brand and size of power supply?

If it won't boot from your XP CD (assuming the BIOS settings are correct, to boot from CD) then you won't be able to run the mfr's utility to test the HDD on that machine. You'd have to put it into another rig to test it. Exactly what is the computer doing when it tries to boot?

Assuming you have access to another computer and to the internet (or you wouldn't be here!), go to the Seagate website and download the diagnostic software. Make a boot floppy with it and run a test on your hard drive that way.

If the floppy is the first boot device set in bios and it's a boot floppy, the diagnostics will run from the floppy.

You need to boot with the XP cd and do a repair reinstall of Windows. You still need to test the hard drive first.
