Nobody has a clue why this happens...!!
Well hi, my name is Alex and I have had this problem ever since my graphics card was installed. I have a Radeon 9600XT with all the ATI stuff that came with it (hydravision etc.) and an Asus P4S800 motherboard i think.
The problem is, that no matter what i set my screen resolution too while the computer is on, it restarts at 640 x 480. I have tried everthing to try and make it remember the settings. and once i select my preference (1024 x 768) there isnt even a option to put it that low!! It is a real nuisance now and any help would be appreciated I have a feeling it ould be related to some dual display thing of my graphics card, and it seems to think i have 2 cards??one called radeon 9600XT and radeon 9600 (secondary) PLease help i have tried everywhere!? Thank you |

the 9600 secondary thing is just that the card has 2 outputs, yes it is supposed to be like that.
Have you tried updating your drivers, reinstalling the card physically, made sure all connections are tight? try the latest ati drivers, and see what happens. make sure when you install it that the old one has been removed, and that no anti-virus software is running. namakan |

Alex, the dual display thing where you might see 9600XT and 9600XT (secondary) in device manager is totally normal. Your card has the ability to support two displays because it has two video outputs. So don't worry about that. I would completely remove any and all ATI drivers and software and download the latest drivers from ATI's website. When you uninstall/remove the drivers, it wouldn't hurt to run Driver Cleaner either. Driver Cleaner is a free program that you can search for and download. It will help ensure that all of the old ATI drivers are gone before you download and install the new ones. You can easily remove all of your ATI software at once by running the ATI Uninstall Utility. (I think that's what it's called) Look around in your hard drive system files for the ATI folder. You should be able to find the Uninstall Utility in there. Run it to wipe out all of your old ATI drivers and it will tell you to restart your computer. When it restarts and the "Found New Hardware Wizard" opens just cancel it and visit ATI's website for the newest drivers.

Thanx, but still working on the problem
thanx for all this, it's mostly stuff that i wouldn't think of, but , i did reinstall my driver several times, and everytime i uninstall it, and restart it the screen loses all colour, and when i reinstall it, (from the disc) the problem is still the same. So , I will try from the website, will i have to unistall the original driver, or just update it??
Thanx very much These are the most useful forums i have been too.

Have you installed the .NET update from windowsupdate.com? ATI drivers require .NET to work properly.

Do you happen to be running motherboard with a VIA chipset.... I've seen this numerous times and it's when you have to start screwing around with the 4 in 1 driver to get things to work right.

Just some thoughts. Recheck your mobo model number. If it is the P4S800, that's an SIS chipset and the VIA 4 in 1 issue doesn't apply. If it is a P4S800-MX, that board has onboard video. If that's your board, did you disable the onboard in the bios?
Next idea. One of the ATI programs allows for changing the resolution on the fly like during a game. Try uninstalling all of the ATI additional software and just leave the drivers in place. May be a problem with the ATI software conflicting with something. If neither of those ideas fix the problem, try switching from the ATI drivers to the custom ATI drivers by Omega. That's all I use since having problems once with stock ATI drivers. Download them from this link but follow the directions carefully. You'll need to uninstall the ATI control panel before you install the Omega drivers. http://www.omegadrivers.net/ |

I had thought somewhere in XP/2000 there was a setting to retain user type information that could be disabled. This sounds like the type of issue you may be having... Are you loging in as Admin?

Have you disabled your old drivers in hardware settings. I am guessing you have on board graphics. No I am not being a smarty pants. Are you sure your monitor is plugged into the new card and not the old card? I have seen that as well. Might try that. Have a nice day. Let us know if you figured it out. Have nice day.
