Dos file conversion command?
A while ago someone taught me this trick to convert a folder of any one type of file to another type.
Like convert all .zip to .rar This only renamed the extension but that is all I need in some cases? Does anyone know the command i'm talking of? Please help? |

did you try ren
changing the ext does not change the file itself. you can change a sys file to a txt file for editing also it would be easer to do this in dos-edit or is it called dosshell |

I dont follow you, what is ren?
What are you talking about with dosshell? I'm using winXP so this is just through the dos prompt shell window. I know it dosnt change the file, only the extension name, but that is what I need. Like I said, if you change the extension name of a .zip to a .rar it is still runnable in winrar, even if you didnt change the actual file properties like you would when converting a .jpg to .bmp This is a dos command that changed all of the type of one like *.you to *.mee inside of a folder. |

ren is rename, and that is what you want.

xp does not contain dos, so you will not have all the dos comands available.
you can change the extension in xp under widows explorer, right click on the file, then click on the properties, if it isn't there, just rename it to what ever you want. |

I'm not sure what you mean by "contain" but it certainly has a fairly extensive DOS shell!!!
And REName is definitely one of the things that it can do. |

I do believe the XP command shell accepts almost all DOS 6.x commands, as does the cmd shell, and the cmd shell has long file name support.
Why do you need to rename all your .zip files to .rar files? Winrar can open .zip files just fine if that's your preferred archive app, and can be associated with .zip files by default if you choose. Last edited by glc; 01-26-2005 at 09:02 PM. |

I just used those as an example, it's actually a rarer format called .cbz, but it's easier to understand with what i said.
Also thank you very much ghost2003, that was EXACTLY the command I wanted and needed. |

If you don't have any other program associated with .cbz, you can do as glc indicates and associate with WinRar and then there is no reason to do the renames.
And, even it here is, you could do something like placing WinRar on your Sendto menu and then doing a Right Mouse, Sendto |

Just asscotiating didn't work, it didn't give me all of the features, ghost 2003 gave the right answer and it's the proper way to do it.
