Windows XP startup problem

I run Windows XP professional. For the past week, whenever I restart my computer, the "blue scrolling bar" on the Win XP logon screen freezes. When I try restarting again, it brings me to where you have a choice (safe mode, run windows normally..etc). Regardless which option I choose, the blue scroll bar freezes up again. It takes about 4-5 restarts before I can finally get to my desktop.

Any ideas what is causing this?

Any recent hardware or software changes to your system?

Only software change is I am using Mozilla Firefox as my browser now instead of IE6. My problem was occuring even before I switched browsers. It's happening more often since I updated to SP2

Just cuz I'm adventurous, here's what I'd do. First, using msconfig, I'd shut down all the startup programs. Keep track of what they are so you can recheck them one at a time. Restart and see if the problem persists. If boots ok, check them one at a time to see which one may be causing the hang.

Second step (or first if you prefer) disconnect all the unnecessary harware, CD drives, usb devices, printers, ets. Try to boot with just the bare essentials. If the problem is gone, reconnect the hardware one device at a time until you find which is causing the problem.

When you get to the desktop are you experiencing any other problems, like freezing or reboots? have there been any electrical problems in your home or the surrounding area recently?

Unfortunately, both suggestions did not work. It took me 11 restarts to get to my desktop after disabling all the startup processes. I am thinking of re-installing XP unless someone else has any more suggestions.

Rather than a total reinstall, you might do a repair/install instead. That way you won't lose any personal files (back em up any way!) or have to reinstall all your programs.
