Windows XP Home Installation Problem
I just built a computer for a friend and we picked up Windows Xp Home Edition w/SP2. While I was installing windows it came up with several files it could not find off the CD, most of them in the i386 folder (or whatever numbers those are) I couldn't get the files to go on at all, I skipped all the files and just let it finish installing windows, and it did, and it boots up into windows just fine. But it didn't install Windows Media Player or any of the games that come with it. I opened the windows CD in explorer and looked for a Windows Media Play install and couldn't find one, So I skipped that and went to install his DVD burner software. It wouldn't let me install that either, it came up with an error and closed itself. I tried a few more installations and they worked, I successfully installed all the VGA Drivers and Chipset drivers. But now he is stuck with no media player and no DVD software, and no sounds like the critical beeps and sounds that windows makes with popups, etc. I am going to try to get a WMP install file on a CD and take it to his house and try to install it that way.
But anyone know why files might not be coming off the CD? The CD is flawless, no scratches at all. I thought it might be something to do with SP2 embedded, but I wasn't for sure. thanks in advance for help. |

Welcome to PCMech. Were you installing on a new HDD? Did you do Express or Custom install? Have you gone to Control Panel - Add Remove Programs - Add/Remove Windows Components to try to install WMP from there?

I used the install from the Windows XP CD. After I loaded Windows and I noticed WMP was not installed, I put in the Windows disc and tried to install it from there, and it would not install, along with the DVD software, but I think the DVD software may not install because it didn't have some of the files that come with WMP. But I am still not sure. I installed windows on a new HDD, with the long format, and no, i haven't tried going to control panel and trying it that way, but I will now.

Is this a genuine Microsoft holographic CD? If so, you may have a flaky CD drive or bad ram. If this is a burned CD, we can't assist here as per the forum rules - except to tell you that the cd may not be a good burn.
