Help! CPU pegged at 100%
Well, I figure I must have some kind of virus. My college provides a free copy of Symantec Antivirus, so I am running that right now, but it's going exceptionally slow, likely because the CPU is pegged. 8/
Well, not really pegged. It stays at 100% for a second, drops down to 92%, jumps back to 100%, falls to 96%, jumps to 100%, down to 88%, you get the idea. This is all, of course, when I am not running anything at all; the Applications tab shows nothing. Of course, the processes tab shows massive amounts of crap, but I have no idea what most of it is. I have run Sybot and Ad-Aware already, and come up with nothing. Any ideas? |

Have you installed any drivers recently ? My system started doing that after I tried to install the newest vid drivers without properly removing the old ones.
Just a thought. |

Nope, no new drivers recently. My computer simply seems to have all sorts of problems. I am running 2000 Pro, by the way. The sound crackles and skips in any program every now and then too. It is quite annoying.
I play WoW, and one day, I accidentally minimized it with something other than Alt-tab. (I have no idea how) Even before this, the computer has serious trouble minimzing the game. The screen always goes black for awhile before anything appears, and sometimes it would just get stuck there, and nothing would help, so I would have to shut it off manually. When I opened it back up, the game was jumping around everywhere. Not exactly due to low fps, more of skipping around. It'll run okay for a second, pause of half a second, run fine, pause, etc. Ever since then, it has done this (likely due to the CPU being pegged) whenevr I play. For some reason though, after running the game for awhile, it will go back to normal. *shrugs* It can't be the game though, as the CPU will start out at 100%, even after restarting the comp and not opening anything, including the game. EDIT: Just checked my virus scan progress: 27 minutes elapse, only 1150 files checked. This is never going to finish. Last edited by EQPlayer; 01-28-2005 at 03:41 PM. |

Say, ya might also try running your antivirus program in safe mode. It may run faster?
