problem upgrading from 98 to XP...blocking issues

i'm attempting to upgrade a machine from 98se to XP home edition. when i start setup, it stops when it gets to the upgrade report with a blocking issue. it's telling me i have conflicting devices..."setup has detected an incompatability between your video card & computer's mainboard..." it's a brand new abit KD7 board and a brand new nvidia TNT2 64 video card running at AGP-4x. everything functioned fine under 98, but now i'm stumped...there is a driver available for XP for the video card, so i don't understand the conflict. i've exhausted all the options i can think of...i just need to get this system running XP, and a clean install is really not an option since it's not my computer i'm working on. there has to be a way around this...ANYONE??? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!! any ideas are much appreciated. thanks!

That KD7 may be a new board, but it's still a board that's been around for a while. You may need to update its bios to be fully compatible with XP - and if you have a PCI card in the first slot next to the AGP card, you should move it to a different slot, those 2 slots share hardware resources.

I had a kind a similar problem when I have upgraded to XP from 98, I did not get a specific message but the setup would just hang up, anyway at the third try I disconnected every peripheral from the PC (Printer, Scanner, Modem) and the upgrade went through. May not be related to your problem but worth the try. Let us know

ok...the computer is not connected to anything other than a lan connection through the built-in ethernet. the only card installed is the nvidia TNT AGP video card. sound is built-in the board.
to be completely honest, flashing the bios has always scared the crap out of me, so i've always avoided doing it in the past. well, today i made my first attempt. i went to the abit bios download site here and first i tried the abit flash-menu. this runs in windows and is supposed to flash your bios automatically. it tells me that my bios is up to date, however, the date is 08/2003. this is the oldest bios listed on the abit website. ??? so i went for it and tried it the old fashioned way...downloaded the latest bios file, made a boot floppy, copied the files, booted...i get to the point where it's about ready to go and it tells me "The program file's part number does not match with your system!" then it stops. what the heck? i'm completely stumped here...the last thing i want to do is render the machine useless and have to then figure out how to recover the bios...bah!! i'm getting pretty frustrated here...why does this have to be so damn difficult? i've got another old video card laying around that may or may not even work...but i'm going to throw it in there and see if it gets me through the upgrade, then i'll swap in the new video card after i get XP running...

anyone have any other tips/ideas/solutions for me? thanks in advance...
