New Build Problem

I recently built the computer in my signature. I have been waiting a while to install windows on it because I was waiting for my new PSU which I just got in today. I hooked everything up and everything seems normal. When I went to install windows xp home it formatted the HD and then copied all the files. It rebooted the computer came to a black screen saying 'press any key to boot from cd'....i pushed a key and then it just freezes on a black screen. I tried restarting it manually and not pushing any key and then it just sits on the 'press any key to boot from cd' screen.

What is the boot device sequence in your BIOS setup? You may want to set 1st boot device to boot from the C:\. Can you get into BIOS setup?

If the keyboard is USB might try swapping it out for a PS2 type.

Yeah I can get to my BIOs. I set the HD as the 1st boot device and goes to the black screen still.

I looked through those links you posted ezystvy and none of them fix my problem. Thanks anyway.

I think I may have figured out why this is happening, but i'm not sure. I only have one windows xp install disc and that is what I use to install xp on all my computers. Then, I just go to microsoft.com and purchase a new license for the product. This saves me some money and I don't have to go out and buy the program everytime I want to install it on another computer. About two weeks ago I lost my windows xp install disc. I have been using a "Windows XP Recovery Disc" from my dad's dell computer. This has worked several times and so I figured I could do it again on this computer. This is the first time I have done this on a SATA drive, I don't know if that changes anything.

So I was thinking it might have something to do with the disc that I am using. If so, does anyone know where I can buy a xp install disc without buying the licensing because I already payed for the license.

P.S. I am NOT trying to install the software illegally. I have already bought the license, but only have the dell recovery disc so that is what I am using.

I decided to go out and buy windows xp professional because I thought that my os was the problem. When I put my new cd in the computer and booted up it did the same thing as last time. It goes to a black screen if I have my first boot device set as my hard drive, and if I boot from the disc it says "setup is checking your hardware configuration" or something and then it goes to a black screen. PLEASE HELP ME!!!

At the very first part of the installation, are you hitting F6 and installing any SATA drivers?

Yes, but now I can't even get to the Windows XP Setup. I can't get past that black screen. I called Seagate because I thought I might have a faulty hard drive and they said that it was not the hard drive. They said it could be the memory or maybe even the PSU. I am going to try testing the memory and PSU right now and I'll get back to you.

Joe, I think in the future you would be well served to just go ahead and buy your OS and keep it with the machine it is installed on. I am starting to think that by using your Dad's Dell recovery disk, that there is proprietary hardware drivers and what-not that is causing allot of your problems. My brother in law works for Microsoft and I asked him how one might buy a lisence like you indicate and he never heard of being able to without having the software key. If you are telling them the same software key over and over you may want to consult your
EULA.

http://shop.microsoft.com/special/wa...fo.asp#qualify..... that is where I am buying my extra license. You mentioned not being able to buy an extra license without having another license but i DO have another license and I am just not buying a new software everytime. I just buy the license for xp as shown on the link I posted.

i think that after the restart you arn't suppose to press the any key thing again. just wait until it passes the screen itself and see what happens

You are paying more for a license than you would pay for an OEM CD.

Using a Dell restore CD is not advisable on anything but a Dell computer.

http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/...s/discwiz.html

Download Disc Wizard Starter Edition (floppy creator) and do a full zero fill on the drive, and start from scratch with a proper OS CD.
