no read permission

friend has a computer with xp os, she does income tax returns, this year when she started retrieve files she got (no read permission) on one of the files. there was no password protection on the file she said, she cleaned the computer up (virus, disk cleanup, defrag, etc ) nothing then she system restored back several months stilll nothing, i googled it and could not find what seemed to be the problem, did get an MS thing but it involved some things i didn't feel comfortable trying. any suggestions?

try logging in on the administrators account, right click the file and choose properties, on the security tab you should then see a list of users and what permissions they have for that file. Click on a group or user to display their permissions.

As the administrator you can take ownership of the file then apply modify permission to your friends logon account.

thanks i'll try that and let you know. i have learned a lot in the last 3 years by having things happen then figurig them out but this was new to me.
