XP repeatedly tells me to install new updates

On my pc, something is going strange with my Windows XP update and also stangely enough is affecting my 9800 pro video card. I have the pc networked to our den and hooked up to my TV so we get a lot of gaming in. It started to show a new update from MS was available and to download so I did, then restart for downloads to take affect. We did, so when I restarted the PC, my ATI prompted me to reregister my graphics card for some reason. When I canceled it out, more updates from MS showed needed to be installed. I repeated this process about 3 more times till I figured out it wasnt going to stop.
Anything I should check first?
So far I have done virus check, spybot check, scanned harddrive for errors and found none?

Are you getting the ati radeon driver listed as critical update?
If so, ignore it and download the latest ati driver directly from www.ati.com. If you already installed it from windowsupdate, uninstall it from add/remove programs. Then install the ati drivers from ati.com, reboot and do a windows update. It should no longer show it anymore.
