Registry problems

Hey,

Recently, my fathers computer had some slight problems, for instance he couldn't get into windows other then by safe mode. If he tried to normally boot into Windows, it would give him a BSOD, and the error code would be : STOP 0x0000001E(0xc0000005,0x8051aebb,0x00000000,0x6f007e0f) KMODE EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED NTOSKRNL.EXE 80518ebb80400000 384d5876-ntoskrnl.exe

And then it would try to dump the physical memory, but would never succeed. So after getting rid of the many viruses and other ah inconveniences, it still wouldn't log into Windows, which led me to think of a corrupted registry. I spoke with Hal and he told me easiest solution would simply be to reload Windows again. So where I am at is the Windows 2000 setup screen, and its telling me if its loaded into the same partition, it will delete all documents, user names, everything. And its EXTREMELY important that it doesn't do that. So do I load it into the same partion but give another folder ending like it suggests?

Thanks.

Hi James...been a long time.

What I would do is remove the hard drive from your Dad's computer and put it in another as slave and then move the important files off that hard drive (assuming this isn't a laptop). Then after the files are saved to the other hard drive, put your Dad's hard drive back in his computer and do a clean install.

Hmm, would it be easier simply to upgrade to XP Cricket? I really would perfer not to do what you suggested, wouldn't be too hard, just..would be rather annoying.

There should have been a repair option which will NOT delete the files.

Repair options? Either of which wanted a repair disk, which I don't have, though we did go through the other part which doesn't require such, but it didn't work.
