Picture Viewer for Win98 SE

I was just wondering if there was any free single-picture viewer/single-folder slideshow viewer that works with Windows 98. Something like the picture and fax viewer that comes with XP. I don't want one of those free photo album things that are everywhere for download online, just something that launches fast and lets me view the picture, but not necessarily edit it. Also, how do I change the defaults in Win98. Currently, it runs some kind of Adobe PhotoDelux Buisness Edition 1.0, which is old,bad and slow. I'd like to change it to something else. There's nothing on the Microsoft website, so it would have to be 3rd party. It might just be that there already is one installed on Win98, but this Adobe thing took over. Who knows.... Thanks for the help.

Yes I do seem to remember that there was a microsoft picture viewer that came with w98se, if you can't find it under programs>accesories or something like that, then I would go to control panel>add remove programs>add remove windows components, and hunt around in there and you'll find exactly what it was called and whether you have need to install it or not. Also when you go over to controlPanel> folder options >file types, that is where you look for the file type for example jpeg and see what is he default handler for that type of file and there is also where you can change it from that adobe program..

www.irfanview.com

It can reclaim associations, you get a screen to do just that when you install it. I really like this little program, it has a lot of features if you need them, but as a quick and dirty viewer, it's fast. Even though I have Paint Shop Pro, I wind up using Irfanview for 90% of the graphics work I do.

Thanks guys. I found a viewer in Accesories that came with Windows. It's made by Kodak and is just called Imaging. Apparently, it can scan things from an attached scanner as well... I could not find, though, the way to change file associations through control panel. I did however download the IrfanView program and it seems very good. The one strange thing is that it didn't put a shortcut to itself in the Start menu even though I told it to. Oh well. Thanks.

I just thought of a follow up question. Speaking of scanners...I have a new-ish HP ScanJet 5470c hooked up to a computer running WinXP (SP2). I've got a wireless network going through my house. The Win98 computer is hooked up to the router directly (I ran the Network Setup Wizard and everything works fine) and the other three computers on it are connected wirelessly and run WinXP, including the one with the scanner. Is there a way to share the scanner on the network so I can scan to other computers with the right software? I looked around through the scanners 'Properties' and such and couldn't find any way to share it. Any ideas? Thanks again.

P.S. File and Printer sharing work perfectly on all the computers, so if sharing scanners is possible, the computers are all probably ready to do so.

The 5470C is not a network ready scanner. You will need a 3rd party solution.

The best generic pic viewer out there if you ask me is Irfanview...
When installing there will be an option to choose formats associated with Irfanview, choose "images only"

I found what may be the picture viewer that came with Windows. I know I said that Kodak imaging thing was it before, but I may have been wrong. I know the Kodak imaging program came with Windows, it's in the Add/Remove Windows Components menu, but this other program was called "Snapshot Viewer" or something of the like and was in program files. (I'm not currently using that computer and it is off.) I know that I did not install that program, and it's interface is very clean and simple. It basically doesn't let you do anything except view the picture. I just need to find a way to change file associations now....

Turns out I was looking in the wrong place the whole time. The snapshot viewer thing was called snapview and only opens .snp files. So called snapshots. No idea what they are.... So the program that comes with Win98 is the Kodak imaging software. The Kodak software comes in two parts. Only one of which I found to be directly accesible from the start menu > accessories. They are both located in C:Windws as .exe files. I believe one is called kodakimg.exe and the other kodakprv.exe, or atleast something like that. Kodakimg is the program that can be accessed from the start menu and is an editing program that does basic stuff, but nothing advanced. Kodakprv is a preview program that just views images and can't do anything. The two programs are connected somehow and using the general options under tools in kodak imaging, you can set which one is the default for the file associations related to kodak imaging/preview. Speaking of file associations, I was looking in the wrong place for the "File Types" menu. I thought you meant there was a directory caleld Folder Options, I didn't think to go into Tools --> Folder Options. Thanks for the help everyone.
