XP Networking problems

okay. My dad just got a P4 from a auction and gave me the job of cleaning it up for use. It has windows XP.

I was setting the LAN up on it (Router/switch w/6 computers counting the one in question and connected to a Shaw Cable modem (Terayon TeraPro TCM200))

All of these computers have the zimple setup of "Autodetect IP" and "Autodetect DNS" The Gateway is a 3COM 3C510

This P4 had a phone modem setup, and I uninstalled it. I think that's when I ran into problems. No matter what I do, It will not reconize the default gateway.

There are no hardware conflicts that I can see. window's firewall is off, settings are right, But the frustrating part is that this guy was online for a breif period of time!

What am I doing wrong? Can you help?

Chris
