Outlook Express
Hi,
Well...I deleted most of my fathers viruses...registry was still corrupted...burned his important files or so I thought, and formatted the system. Unfortunately, the outlook email wasn't burned, I don't know what I did wrong with that, but I thought I had it and in reality I didn't. So I got a data recovery software *Ontrack*, and I was able to recover the email files...problem is, Outlook refuses to open them or even see them, it won't import them, I tried putting them in the same folder, nothing happens. I don't get it. Netscapes mail is all back and all working...I just don't get it. Any ideas? |

are you sure you burned the files that has pst extension (Outlook) ? or dbx extension (Outlook express)? The folders were these files are located are hidden and if you have just copied and pasted without showing the hidden files then you made a mistake. If you reinstalled windows and it installed it to the sectors of the Hard Drive were your previous files were then using data recovery wont do any good. Umm Try stellar phoenix.

Remove the read only attribute from the .dbx files. When you burn anything to a CD, it makes them read only. OE can't import read only files. When you do the import, you have to import from an OE6 store directory.

Well, I did that. And I tried importing them again, this time it says its importing all files, but nothing happens. What actually is a OE6 store directory?

It's the folder that contains the .dbx files.

You are probably doing it right, it's very likely that the files you "recovered" are no good. Once you format a drive, there's no guarantee that any recovery software can recover usable files.

Thats what I thought for a while as well, until I got a program called "Mail Navigator", and the emails work fine. They open right up in it. I can read them, no weird little errors. No code. I just don't get it.

Well...to bring things up to date. His files REFUSE to work properly on his system, except, hehe, if I put the Store folder onto his main drive and take a certain folder, for instance C:\Email\ACAP and then put the ACAP file in there. it will work. BUT JUST THAT ACAP FILE...nothing else will. Now...ON MY system, I put the store folder, and every single email works. I really don't get it at all beyond that my fathers system has some sort of a demon in it that hates me. Any ideas?

Could you just e-mail them back to your dad again? I had to do that once ,it came in as one big file but I could open it . Kept it till I was sure there wasn't anything in it I wanted then deleted it.
