boot disk
I want to make a boot disk for XP pro. But noit a floppy. A CD. I understan a floppy with the files boot.ini, ntdetect.com, and ntldr will work. But will it work on a CD?
Thanks |

Why don't you just boot with the OS CD?

Forgive me for bringing back a dead thread, but I'm actually looking into doing this as well....
I'd like to have a boot menu that has the functionality of normal DOS (as opposed to the DOS command interpreter built into the WinXP CD Restore function, which takes a while to load anyway), but can see NTFS drives as easily as FAT32 drives (ideally, something I could pop in an XP system, look around at files, for example, and then pop it in a 98SE system, and do the same)... As well, though I'll have to come up with a creative way of figuring out how to load specific individual drivers, I'd like a "Play Game in DOS Mode" option, where it loads DOS (again, that can access NTFS partitions), but will appropriate boot files (perhaps stored on a seperate floppy?) that address hardware as the old, DOS4GW games did, with one INI file serving as a primitive mouse and sound driver). My younger brother found an old "DiscWorld" CD, and wants to play, but needs to boot to DOS for it in order to load a sound driver (he's got a SBLive, so setting up the old-style SB16 legacy driver shouldn't be hard, I just need to get the system booting to DOS and all that). Maybe another option here or there; basically, get into DOS to tinker with things outside of windows, but without a "handicapped" command interpreter, play old DOS games, maybe a command which will do "Safe mode with Networking" or "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" without having to hit F8, and anything else I can think of. ...Is all this making any sense, or am I not understanding how WinXP would handle this, compared to Win9X on a FAT32 partition? |
