Unhappy Installed new cpu but now windows xp crashed?

Evening

I just upgraded my cpu from an AMD 2400xp to a 3200xp. The bios picked up the change okay and the machine booted into windows. However the screen got all distorted after a few minutes and the machine froze. I rebooted and now get this message:

Windows cannot start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\Windows\System32\Config\System

You can attempt to repair this file using the original Setup Cd-Rom by selecting 'r'

I have just done this and its all console and I have no idea what to do. Does anyone have any help or am I looking at losing everything and having to reinstall XP?

Many thanks

Haggis

There may be a better way to do this, but I had this error before and a repair install fixed it. (going to install windows in the setup and then pressing R when it finds the previous install.)

As I said there might be a better way to do this.

This is the only solution I have found for a problem such as this.

you could try a repaire install, thats differant from the repair console.
just keep going and don not select the repaire consol, select install.
then you will get a install repaire and it will reinstall xp and your settings and files will remaine intact.
you will have to reinstall all the service packs and patches over again.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I got into the repair console but have no idea what commands to use to repair this problem. I looked on the microsoft page and that was no help. Any ideas?

I also went through as you suggested Bailey but it told me this install will overwrite the existing one on that partition. I hit enter and now its telling me to choose whether to format or just copy? Is this the right thing?

Thanks,
Haggis

i upgraded my CPU from 366 to 500 and i have the same error almost
instead of

\Windows\System32\Config\System
it says \Windows\System32\driver\pci.sys

i tried with repairing the XP with 500,(with 366,it goes to the console page :| )but before even reaching the console page it gives me setupdd.sys error

is my only chance to format now

Hi Black knight

I got to admit I formatted and did a re-install but same error. I then flashed my bios up to the latest and "poof" problems gone. I just hope my whole format was not in waste. But its good to clean out the cobwebs and start again.
