Evening
I just upgraded my cpu from an AMD 2400xp to a 3200xp. The bios picked up the change okay and the machine booted into windows. However the screen got all distorted after a few minutes and the machine froze. I rebooted and now get this message: Windows cannot start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \Windows\System32\Config\System You can attempt to repair this file using the original Setup Cd-Rom by selecting 'r' I have just done this and its all console and I have no idea what to do. Does anyone have any help or am I looking at losing everything and having to reinstall XP? Many thanks Haggis |

There may be a better way to do this, but I had this error before and a repair install fixed it. (going to install windows in the setup and then pressing R when it finds the previous install.)
As I said there might be a better way to do this. |

you could try a repaire install, thats differant from the repair console.
just keep going and don not select the repaire consol, select install. then you will get a install repaire and it will reinstall xp and your settings and files will remaine intact. you will have to reinstall all the service packs and patches over again. |

Thanks for the replies guys.
I got into the repair console but have no idea what commands to use to repair this problem. I looked on the microsoft page and that was no help. Any ideas? I also went through as you suggested Bailey but it told me this install will overwrite the existing one on that partition. I hit enter and now its telling me to choose whether to format or just copy? Is this the right thing? Thanks, Haggis |

Hi Black knight
I got to admit I formatted and did a re-install but same error. I then flashed my bios up to the latest and "poof" problems gone. I just hope my whole format was not in waste. But its good to clean out the cobwebs and start again. Haggis |
