splat windows98

I am using my computer with windows98 for the past 5 years.Of late i find that after a bad shutdown the scan disk does not run automatically and the computer freezes on start up on windows 98 screen.I have to use the boot disk to start the computer and then get into windows from dos. Then the scandisk runs and i am able to boot the machine. What could be wrong?.How do i correct this? Can anybody help.
Thanks

Sounds like it's time for a Windows reinstall - or the hard drive is on its way out. Do a thorough scandisk in Windows, or do a surface test in DOS scandisk.

. . . I imagine you've probably run the diagnostics that glc recommended by now, so if all's well with the hardware - and you're ready to try a reinstall, here's a guide for an "over-the-top" type of reinstall (it's from the Tips & Tricks forum here at PC Mechanic) http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=70846

Of course, if you have good backups, and all the device drivers you need - you also have the option to wipe the drive clean and do a fresh install.
. . . Gary

If you don't have 98SE, nope. You can upgrade to 98SE with an over the top install if you have a 98SE CD.

Yes, do the over the top install as per the link that Gary provided. Use your SE product key.

Send a message via AIM to Panama Red
Make sure you get all the updates for 98se from Windows Update. Especially if you use that machine on the web.
