I recently purchased Norton Ghost as a backup solution after others I tried just did not work as well as they should have. I followed their instructions to allow Ghost to be installed/run with XP SP2 which were:
1. Change DEP to: Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select 2. Edit boot.ini so that the line /noexecute=optout is under the [operating systems] heading. Now when I boot the computer, instead of booting right into windows it stops at a boot menu with the two options of Windows and OPTOUT. Even though it only takes one keypress to pass I find it very annoying. Why is this done and can I get around it and still be able to run Ghost, other than uninstalling SP2? ![]() Even better... I can't get Ghost to work either. When I try to make a backup I get the following error: Error EBAB001A: An unknown exception has occurred, which tells you absolutely nothing. So now I have an expensive piece software (glad I get a rebate at least) that not only did I have to make system changes to install and run in the processes screwed with the way my system boots, but the damn piece of crap won't work and won't tell me why!! Is there such a thing as backup software that works? NTI wouldn't work for me either... backs up but gets an error when trying to verify. NTI's solution? Turn off verification! Hah! Any ideas/suggestions? Last edited by TedEBear; 02-16-2005 at 09:21 AM. |

I imagine you might have already seen this article, but in case you haven't, here's a link from Symantec's support site http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...st&svy=&csm=no
And, regarding the DEP situation, did you read through the TechNet link Symantec refers users to, who have recent Athlon64s or P4s? You might find a clue or two in the details regarding possible incompatibilities between DEP and device drivers on your system http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro.../sp2mempr.mspx And is the NTI completely gone? Might try a Registry clean go-through. I'm going to try Ghost 9 on an SP2 install sometime this week or next, so if I find anything interesting as a result of that, I'll add it here. . . . Gary |
