Frozen when booting up

I have a PC that freezes when starting up with the power button. About 5 out of 6 times the PC will freeze as soon as it gets to the Log on screen. After 5 or so times it will boot up ok and then it will work with no problems at all. If I restart the system there are no problems at all. It is only when I switch it on with the power button. Anyone have any ideas?

Windows 2000.
Athlon XP 1800
512MB Generic RAM
60GB IDE
Motherboard??? - No Markings

Have you checked your error log and looked in event viewer? Please post what they say, so we can get a better idea of what's causing the problem.

Wink

i think you press the ctrl key and f8 in order for the menu to show bootlog option...

/BOOTLOG - This option tells Windows XP to log everything it does during the boot process to the c:\windows\ntbtlog.txt file. This can be useful for diagnosing startup problems by seeing exactly where the boot process is hanging.

open and read the file, it should help you

Bad cd

The bootlog didnt contain anything to suggest a crash, although I will definitely be using the bootlog in the future.
I found an error in the event viewer, id 7, cdrom (has a bad block). I have removed the cd drive and I will test the pc for a while. Hopefully that was the problem. Thanks
