Restoring Lost User accounts in XP
I recently re-installed Windows XP Home on my laptop, after it installed it would recognize the old user accounts, nor will it let me open the folders. The folder is still under the documents and settings but each time I try to access it, I get an error saying access is denied. Is there any way of get windows xp to see the user account so that I can log back in and access my old files.

Were those accounts password protected and more importantly were the files encrypted by any chance?

Start it in safe mode and log in as Administrator, then take ownership of the folders and files you need. Give everyone full control so when you boot back into a user account, they will have access.
