Can't get into Setup Utility
I have an old Compaq Deskpro 2000 and I can't get into the Setup Utility. Compaq says hitting F10 is supposed to do the trick but I've had no luck. I've hit F10 multiple times during multiple boots but still can't get in. F1 doesn't work either nor do any other F keys except F8, but that doesn't help me get into the Setup Utility.
A little background: I'm working on this computer for a friend. I think the hard drive may be bad but I want to try and re-install Windows before condemning it. But the computer isn't recognising the CD-ROM during the boot. Tried doing it from a command prompt but the computer doesn't recognise the CD-ROM there either. The CD-ROM opens and closes and the green light flickers and you can hear the thing spin up, so I believe it's probably good. Any suggestions...? |

That only works if the diagnostic partition is still on the hard drive, and if the hard drive is dead or someone has repartitioned it, that would explain it. You are gonna have to boot it with a floppy. Might as well determine the hard drive brand and download the manufacturer's diag utility, most of those are bootable floppy makers. If you are going to reinstall Windows on another drive (or that drive if it's still good and the diag partition is gone), you will need to download the Softpaq for that machine to reset the diagnostic partition or use the factory restore floppy and CD.
