Question windows xp problem

I am unable to use my computer. I am using windows xp. The message that I receive is " Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original setup CD ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. I tried reloading WINDOWS XP andselecting 'r' but I continue to get the same message. The I tried loading windows98 but got the same result. I am looking for suggestions

If I understand you right, I don't think you are booting from the cd. Put the XP cd in the drive, restart and enter setup (usually by hitting "delete" at the splash screen). Right-arrow over to "Boot" section, then down-arrow to first boot device. WRITE DOWN what it says, then, Hit enter, and pick "cdrom",enter. Arrow up all the way, then right all the way to "save changes and exit". Might be different on yours, but this gives you the general idea. BE SURE to reset the first boot device back to where it was when you get done. Try not to reinstall windows, just the system files. See ya in a few!!

You have a corrupt registry. Boot with the CD and follow this procedure.
