Xp pro boot from CD

I'm trying to format and reinstall win xp in a p3 450 288mb ram.

In the bios I have reset the first boot to device to D: and it goes to the boot windows normally or safe mode options . I've tried changing the bios to boot from CD Rom and it goes to the boot options window. I've got 2 cd rom drives. one is a cd writer and the other a reader and I've tried naming first one then the other as first boot device but it seems to ignore this instruction and boots from hd giving the option of normal, last good config or safe mode etc.

Is there any way to format and do a complete clean install that I havent thought of yet.

Set it to boot temporarily from cdrom as the only option possible and see if that makes a difference.. Soon as windows loads, and does it's first reboot make sure to catch the BIOS at that time a and set HD back as boot option.

Are you booting with a genuine Microsoft holographic XP CD?

Disconnect the CD burner and try to boot with the reader - if that doesn't work, reverse the procedure.
